What do you think the crime rate in US is? Where do you think US stands in relation to crime rate with other developed countries and the world at large. It is a stunning reality that our founding fathers wherever they are, will be nodding their heads in disagreement for the spontaneous rise in crime rate. Despite the crimes in the various countries in the world, there wasn't any formal recording crime statistics. The first systematic collection of national judicial statistics on persecution and conviction was done by France in the year 1825, and later the US and other nations follow suit, as reported in www.law.jrank.org.
According to the statistics listed in wiki, US is ranked 48 in crime (it is computed as the number of victims in every 100,000 people) in the world and number one among its fellow developed nations. What stunned me is that while US is ranked 48th, China which has 5 times the population of US is ranked 75th and India which is 4 times US is 67th. Yes, i know there are some discrepancy in the recording and reporting of data between US, a democratic country and China, a Communist state, as it's evident, China will always filter the amount of information to be make public. That notwithstanding, if you take a look to analyze the model applied by US to curb crime wave is by far less effective compared to an ideal model implemented in a country like Norway. Take for example, the recent Norwegian $252 million Halden Fengsen prison reported in Time magazine, May edition, an incarceration facility which has been built with the goal to develop the knowledge of inmates by teaching them trade skills so that when they leave the prison they can easily integrate into the society. Unlike the Norwegian model, the US model is to give prisoners the worse nightmare there can ever be. This model of treating prisoners inhumanely has not worked, and will never work. In fact, from the same Time Magazine citation, 20% of Norwegian convicts end up back in jail within 2 years of their release, while in the same time stretched 60% of US convicts end up back in jail. Now, judge for yourself, which model is better? As statistics has shown, most convicts are the least educated in the society coming from poor homes. It is obvious that the Norwegians have identified the root cause of crimes and have developed a realistic model to tackle the problem. They have noted that providing education and trade skills to inmates will facilitate their integration into the society when they are release, hence plummeting their chances of engaging in criminal activities.
My wish is that US can also copy some of the successful models other countries have implemented in order to make this country a crime free society for all its citizen to live fear free.
